The modern-day post of Prime Minister of Nepal has been known by several names throughout Nepalese history. The Mul-Kajis have served as Prime Ministers from the Shah dynasty's birth. Rana Bahadur Shah was appointed to the role of Muktiyar in 1806, and the title was afterwards adopted. Muktiyar Bhimsen Thapa was the first person to be referred to as Prime Minister by the British, despite the fact that the title "Muktiyar" means "Royal Representative." Bhimsen's nephew, Mathabar Singh Thapa, was the first Muktiyar to title himself Prime Minister, as per British protocol.
Only a few Nepalese prime ministers have been elected via democratic means. In 1959, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala became the country's first elected Prime Minister. Nepal did not have a democratic government after he was ousted and imprisoned until 1990, when the country became a constitutional monarchy. The monarchy was deposed by the Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008.
