Early Life

He was one of the 17 sons born to Chief of the Army Dhir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana and his third wife, Rani Nanda Kumari, who was a Kazi Hemdal Singh Thapa's daughter (sister of Commanding Colonel Keshar Singh Shumsher Thapa).

His father and brothers struggled to support a large family. Compared to Jung and other cousins, the Shamshers were less wealthy. Dev was adopted at a young age by his father's older sibling, General Krishna Bahadur Kunwar Ranaji, and was raised by him and his wife to lessen the burden on his father.

Dev received a more affluent upbringing than his siblings because he was Krishna's adopted child and the governor of Palpa. He only ever encountered his siblings at celebrations and family get-togethers. He was closer to Jung's sons and spent the majority of his time at Thapathali Durbar, their palace. He received a portion of his father's wealth as well as all of his uncle's wealth. He was significantly wealthier than his brothers, and they envied him.

Coup

Many of Jung Bahadur's sons were killed in 1885 by the Shamsher family and Jung Bahadur's nephews, who also used a military coup to seize control of Nepal and establish their rule. They assassinated Sri 3 Maharaja Ranodip Singh and took control of the prime ministerial throne. Although they were descended from Jung's younger brother Dhir Shamsher, they later added Jung Bahadur to their name.

Due to what had occurred during the coup, Dev felt bad. General Dhoj Narsingh Rana held him at gunpoint, but he was pardoned and allowed to live. He requested that the family members in exile come home to Nepal. Ranodip Singh, whose biological father was Badri Narsingh Rana, and many of Jung's descendants were forced to flee to India, and Dhoj adopted the son of Ranodip.

Dev was unaware that the Shamsher brothers had organized the coup. The Shamshers did not think Dev would take part in the uprising against the Jungs because of his close ties to the Jung family. Dev was drunk and slept in Ranabir Jung's quarters the night the Shamshers attacked and killed the Jung Ranas. He was mistaken for a Jung and almost killed, but one of the killers recognized him, saving him.
