A versatile personality Balen Shah

INTRODUCTION

  Balendra Shah is the current and 15th mayor of Kathmandu city. He is well known as Balen or Balen Shah.Balen is a Nepalese politician, rapper, songwriter, structural engineer, and composer. He is also a judge on the hip-hop reality TV show "Nephop ko Shreepech," which is now airing on Image Channel.

EARLY LIFE AND FANILY

Shah was born on April 27, 1990, in Naradevi, Kathmandu. He is the youngest son of Ram Narayan Shah, an Ayurvedic practitioner, and his wife Dhruvadevi Shah. After his father was appointed to the Naradevi Ayurvedic Hospital, his parents moved from Mahottari to Kathmandu. His father's family is from the Ekdara Rural Municipality in Mahottari, while his mother hails from Dhanusha.

EDUCATION 

Shah earned his 10+2 diploma from V.S. Niketan Higher Secondary School. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the White House Institute of Science and Technology. He also has a master's degree in structural engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in Karnataka (VTU).

MUSIC CAREER

Music and Poetry has great influence in his life since the  beginning.Sadak Balak, his debut single, which he penned while in ninth grade, was published in 2012. After appearing on the YouTube combat rap series Raw Barz in 2013, he became well-known among Nephop enthusiasts.  He is also a judge on the hip-hop reality TV show "Nephop ko Shreepech," which is now airing on Image Channel.

POLITICAL CAREER

Before the Nepalese Constitution was promulgated in 2015, Shah was a member of the "We For Constitution" campaign. He had previously shown interest in running for mayor of Kathmandu in the 2017 municipal elections, but eventually withdrew his candidacy.

Since 2019, Shah has been pondering a candidacy for mayor, and on December 17, 2021, he announced that he will run as an independent. His campaign focused on garbage collection, traffic control, public service delivery, anti-corruption, and preserving the city's historic past.

 Shah was elected with 38.6% of the vote on May 26, 2022. He defeated Nepali Congress candidate Sirjana Shrestha and former mayor and CPN (UML) candidate Keshav Sthapit by over 23,000 votes. Shah was sworn in as mayor on May 30, 2022, and administered the oath of office to the other members of the municipal assembly who had been elected in the elections.
