Sanduk Ruit brief biography - The Barefoot surgeon

Sanduk Ruit
Dr. Sanduk Ruit, an opthalmologist (eye surgeon) who has restored the sight/vision of over 1,30,000 persons across Asia and Africa, was born on September 4, 1954 in Olangchung Gola, a remote municipality in the Himalayas of Nepal's Taplejung District.

Dr. Ruit was raised in a difficult environment, with the nearest school a week's walk away and little access to health care. His sister's death from tuberculosis, a preventable and treatable disease, when he was 17 inspired him to become a doctor.

Ruit is a founder member of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, which provides free eye care to the poor. It also produces high-quality intraocular lenses for surgery at a tenth of the cost of its previous manufacturing. The extraordinarily low cost of these lenses has made high-quality cataract surgery accessible to the world's poorest people.
