DR. SANDUK RUIT: Eye Surgeon and Co-Founder of Himalayan Cataract Project, Nepal
Dr. Sandak Ruit, who needs no introduction, has performed over 100,000 cataract procedures. He is referred to as the "God of Vision."
Sanduk Ruit brief biography - The Barefoot surgeon
Dr. Ruit was raised in a difficult environment, with the nearest school a week's walk away and little access to health care. His sister's death from tuberculosis, a preventable and treatable disease, when he was 17 inspired him to become a doctor.
Ruit is a founder member of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, which provides free eye care to the poor. It also produces high-quality intraocular lenses for surgery at a tenth of the cost of its previous manufacturing. The extraordinarily low cost of these lenses has made high-quality cataract surgery accessible to the world's poorest people.
